Artist of the week: Torres
Torres is the musical moniker of Mackenzie Scott, an independent Nashville native singer, songwriter, musician and artist who recorded her debut eponymous record, 2013’s Torres, aged only 21 during a five-day live session that would become mythic: after touring extensively its songs through the US and Europe, the album become a favorite among critics who praised her multi-faceted voice, the universal appeal of her stories of fear, heartbreak, inadequacy and self-acceptance, and the maturity of her musical talent. Though comparisons to PJ Harvey were immediate (and spot on), they shouldn’t obfuscate the sheer originality of her haunting voice.
After a guest spot on Sharon Van Etten’s 2014 album Are We There? and a great single, «New Skin», released in the same year, Torres is finally back with Sprinter, a sophomore effort produced by Rob Ellis that truly takes her songs to another level: they showcase a dynamic range and an attention to detail that definitely lacked on her debut. A definitive highlight of what has been so far a massive musical year that, nevertheless, could really use the strength and emotional depth of such a great female artist.
