Artists of the week: The Wytches
The Wytches are an English surf-psych band formed in 2011 from the ashes of The Crooked Canes by vocalist, guitarist and composer Kristian Bell, drummer Gianni Honey and bassist Daniel Rumsey, who had previously played for some punk and metal local bands.
After releasing three singles in 2013 that pretty much sounded like murky tunes from some obscure Quentin Tarantino home-movie, the trio quickly cut ten more tracks for Annabel Dream Reader, their infectious (and vaguely conceptual) debut album. The record aims for a deliberately primitive sound that combines both trashed guitars and intricate surf licks with a simple but deeply effective rhythm section, while Bell’s vocals alternate between fragile and full-on blast with an ease that more than once brings to mind Jack White’s delivery. It’s a perfect mix of post-grunge ammunition with 50s sheer paraphernalia – and it’s eerily catchy.
