Artist of the Week: Moderat
Moderat is an German electronic supergroup formed by Sascha Ring (aka Apparat), Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary (Modeselektor). The first output of this promising trio was 2002’s Auf Kosten der Gesundheit, an EP whose title (“At The Cost of Health”) was a strong indicator of the reasons why it would take them 7 years to collaborate again.
Their 2009’s self-titled debut was, nevertheless, a critical success and combined pop structured songs and occasional vocals with an eclectic electronic sensibility that mixed lush atmospheric pieces with club-oriented techno assaults. The album was also the perfect medium to launch a series of worldwide tours that made their collaboration match (or even top) the popularity of their individual parties. Moderat‘s live act was even voted the best of 2009 by the readers of the influential online electronic music magazine Resident Advisor.
Their recently released and much anticipated sophomore LP, simply titled II, is a strong contender for one of the most fascinating electronic records of this year, combining genres as diverse as techno, reggae, dub step, glitch, indie, hip-hop and R&B that refines their debut’s approach and definitely eliminates any listenable evidence of the usual derivative symptomatology attached to side-projects.
