Artist of the Week: Junip
Junip is a Sweden-based indie band that was formed in the late 90s by singer-songwriter, José González (vocals, guitars), Elias Araya (drums) and Tobia Winterkorn (keyboards). In their first decade, the trio only released a 7” (2000’s Straight Lines) and an EP (2006’s Black Refuge) due do the successful solo career of José González who released two indie and Nick Drake-inspired hit albums: Veneer (2005) and In Our Nature (2007).
Their debut album, Fields, was finally released and critically acclaimed in 2010, featuring a more elaborate take on González dark, low-key and moody indie folk, incorporating other styles such as pop, blues, electronic, krautrock and ambient sounds.
Their new and self-titled record, Junip, goes even further in exploring their truly kinetic strengths and combining González meticulous song craft with Brazilian rhythms, Jazzy textures and German motoric.
