Artist of the week: Darkside
Darkside is the duo formed by dance music producer and electro-pop minimalist composer Nicolas Jaar and multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington. Though they first met when they were both students at Brown University, it was only when Jaar was looking for a guitar player to help him tour his 2011′s Space Is Only Noise that the two started to collaborate. Their first release was a self-titled EP (2011) that contained three cosmic and untitled grooves that sounded like both spellbinding and menacing deconstructions of disco, blues and western spaghetti soundtracks. Their next move was, under the Daftside pseudonym, to release in June 2013 a full hollowed-out remix of Daft Punk’s latest album on SoundCloud aptly titled Random Access Memories Memories.
Psychic, their first and recently released full-length record is an eclectic clash of noises, bluesy vibes, electronic echoes and dubby undertones that manages to sound both experimental and engaging. Listen (once) again: Space is only music if you can see.
